Sumners Foundation

The Sumners Foundation is one of the largest private educational funds in the state. Virtually any student who is a resident of Webster County, passes the college entrance requirements, and maintains a C average or better may receive tuition assistance at one of four institutions of higher learning in the state.

The amount of income is divided between the institutions, and the amount awarded to each student depends on the income of the trust and the number of students awarded from the designated counties in those institutions.

Sumners Grant

E. H. "Harry" and Ginger Sumners spent their lifetime building a successful timber business in Central Mississippi. Through their benevolence, the Sumners Foundation was created to promote the advancement of education. To honor her husband’s work, the foundation was established in 1977. The foundation awards scholarships to residents of Webster County and four other counties where the Sumner's timber business was centered. As one of the largest privately funded foundations ever established in Mississippi for higher education, the trust gives assistance to residents for undergraduate, graduate and even continuing education studies.

To receive the grant students must meet college entrance requirements and live in Webster or other awarded counties. To remain eligible, a student must maintain satisfactory academic progress, a C average or better. Part-time students may receive a prorated share of the annual award depending on the number of semester hours for which they are enrolled. Contact the financial aid office of the participating institutions for a Sumners Grant application and guidelines for receiving the award.
